A family collection, grown in the Queensland countryside
Valewood is a small family clivia breeder on a 67-acre property north of Toowoomba.
The collection
More than 13 years of collecting and breeding
Valewood has spent more than 13 years collecting quality clivia plants and seed from Australia and around the world. All six clivia species now grow in our shade house.
Selective breeding has produced, and keeps producing, a diverse collection: Group 2 yellows and greens, peaches and pinks, bronzes, interspecifics, and the reds we have been chasing for years. Reds take many years to breed. Whole crosses are grown on and most are culled to keep the odd gem, then the gems are crossed again.
The place
Cold winters, mild summers
Our climate is similar to Stanthorpe. Winters are cold, with temperatures as low as -7.5°C, so plants are protected with frost cloth on extreme nights. Summers rarely go above 34°C.
These conditions seem to bring out the colour. Growers have told us that plants they bred elsewhere show stronger, more vibrant colours when grown here.
The shade house
Our shade house is 26 metres long and 15 metres wide, covered with 80% black shade cloth. Every plant sits on a bench at waist height so air moves freely around it. The plants are watered from our tanks, and in dry spells from groundwater of drinking quality.
How we grow
Patience, shade and air flow
Pots sit off the ground for air flow. Plants are fed a slow-release fertiliser with trace elements through the growing season and in mid-winter, and never watered in the evening or on days over 30°C. Seedlings stay in their community pots until they are at least 18 months old.

A small family business
Valewood is run by a family. Bradley grows and breeds the plants, and the rest of the family helps with orders, customer questions and this website. Every plant is checked before it is sold, and we’re always happy to share what we’ve learned.
